Furie defended Pepe in court: Matt Furie successfully sued Infowars in 2018 over an unauthorized Pepe poster, and went after a children's book that misappropriated the character. He took copyright of Pepe seriously even while the meme ran wild.

also: in 2017 he literally drew a comic where Pepe died, in a symbolic attempt to take the character back. didn't stick. you can't kill a frog, anon.

Fun fact #3: Pepe is genuinely loved in Hong Kong. During the 2019 protests he was adopted as a chill, sympathetic mascot — protestors painted him on signs and stickers. Many of them had no idea about the western drama around the character. To them he was just a cute sad frog.
